Fibromyalgia Q & A

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by areas of tenderness and pain throughout the body. While fibromyalgia can cause pain to occur anywhere, it is most often reported in the neck, back, shoulders, arms, and legs. The exact cause of fibromyalgia has not yet been identified. However, it is often linked to injuries, accidents, or other physically or emotionally stressful events. Fibromyalgia is often linked to illness although it can also occur spontaneously.

Fibromyalgia is often linked with arthritis, although it is not an arthritic disease because it doesn’t cause inflammation in the joints. It is considered a rheumatic disease because it does cause pain and mobility issues in the joints. Research currently is being performed to study the connection between the central nervous system and the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Some researchers believe there may be a genetic connection that makes some people more sensitive to neural stimulus.

What are common symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Women are approximately 10 times more likely to experience fibromyalgia than men. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Tenderness and pain throughout the body, primarily in the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and legs
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Lower pain tolerance
  • Depression and anxiety

Other symptoms often associated with fibromyalgia include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Chronic headaches
  • Concentration issues
  • Dryness in nose, mouth, and eyes
  • Incontinence
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Hypersensitivity to temperature
  • Numbness or tingling in feet and fingers
  • Stiffness

How is fibromyalgia diagnosed and treated?

Dr. Key has helped many patients who suffer from fibromyalgia. He practices structural chiropractic which involves adjustments to correct the structure of the spine, which is the foundation of your body’s strength and physical integrity. Before applying any treatment, Dr. Key performs a thorough physical exam to identify any misalignments or structural imbalances that may contribute to your condition or any painful symptoms. Once Dr. Key identifies the underlying condition contributing to the secondary condition of fibromyalgia, he begins treatments which may include structural adjustments, guided exercises, and massage treatments.

If you are living with fibromyalgia or have unexplained, chronic pain, make an appointment with Dr. Key at Key Chiropractic FLA for efficient diagnostics and effective treatment.
